Reduce mortality after weaning weaning by 36%.
Discover how Tonisity PxW can support your farm’s performance. Backed by data from over 70,000 pigs, this water-soluble supplement improves hydration, gut health and productivity during critical stress periods such as post-weaning.
Boost Productivity on Your Pig Farm This Summer
Heat stress is one of the most underestimated challenges in modern pig farming and it’s getting worse.
In many European regions, summer temperatures can soar to 35 – 40°C. This has detrimental effects on piglets, especially during transport at weaning. Newly weaned piglets are transported over 1,000s of kilometres and while measures are in place to ensure welfare standards, piglets are under a lot of stress. Especially in summer, thirst and heat stress are dangerous.
For sows nearing farrowing, the high Summer temperatures create an environment far outside their thermal comfort zone (13 – 24°C), severely impacting hydration, feed intake and overall performance.
Through trials conducted across the globe, we have demonstrated that Tonisity PxW helps improve overall pig productivity by offering a practical solution for farmers looking to support their pigs during challenging periods.
Let’s take a closer look at the science and results behind this innovative solution to pig farms.
The main challenges for summer pig production
Why Water Intake Is Critical After Weaning in Piglets
Water is an essential nutrient in pig production especially during the immediate post-weaning phase. Without adequate water intake, piglets face health and productivity issues.
At weaning, water intake drops drastically from around 800–900 ml per day to just 200 ml. Nearly 90% of piglets may take 30–35 hours to start drinking again, and it can take up to a week for their hydration levels to return to normal.
Consequences of Low Water Intake After Weaning
- Lower feed intake
- Intestinal dysbiosis, disrupting the gut microbiota
- Reduced nutrient absorption
- Increased susceptibility to pathogens
- Higher post-weaning mortality rates
Tonisity PxW is a waterline solution for post-weaning pigs
Tonisity PxW is designed to be administered to pigs after weaning through water lines and provides a science-backed solution that can address these issues.
Tonisity’s bioactive solutions are based on extensive research into the gut pathways and optimising hydration in pigs. Tonisity PxW is an innovative and palatable combination of key amino acids, prebiotics and electrolytes that hydrates and supports the gut to help weaned piglets during stressful transition periods.
When given to piglets post-weaning, Tonisity PxW:
- Provides intestinal support and helps with nutrient absorption
- Stimulates early and sustained water intake at weaning
- Helps manage weaning stress and improve piglet resilience

The Evidence Behind Tonisity PxW: Pig Hydration = Pig Performance
Over the last years we have worked on numerous scientific trials and meta-analyses which show that Tonisity PxW deliver:

Tonisity PxW for Piglets: Post-Weaning Made Safer and More Profitable
In a meta-analysis of 7 studies with 31,861 piglets, Tonisity PxW administered for 5 days:
- Increased water intake as early as 12 hours post-weaning
- 1.7x higher water intake in the first 5 days post-weaning
- 36% reduction in post-weaning pig mortality
- 18% reduction in post-weaning fall-behinds

In a head-to-head trial vs a top competitor electrolyte (Electrolyte B) administered for 5 days:
- 5,665 pigs across 8 production batches
- PxW pigs drank 22% more water on day 1
- Gained 300 g more body weight by day 42
- Showed 17% lower mortality (despite the low baseline)
- Showed 65% fewer fall-behinds (despite the low baseline)
Case Study: Tonisity PxW Reduces Sow Mortality During Lactation – Romania
A 4-batch, 400-sow trial in Romania (Study 23-021-P-P) tested Tonisity PxW under severe summer conditions. Farrowing house temperatures exceeded 33°C. Sows were assigned to:
- Control Group – no supplementation
- PxW Group – received Tonisity PxW via waterline (0.2%) for the first 7 days post-farrowing
Results:
- 71% reduction in lactating sow mortality (3.5% → 1.0%; P = 0.09)
- Piglets were more active and showed better growth in the farrowing unit

This result highlights how gut-enhancing hydration solutions can improve sow resilience during heat stress, protecting both the dam and her litter.
